try looking at the stars

If you felt that watching a sunset was too obvious a thing to do, to be considered a meditation, then you will think the same about gazing at the stars. For people have gazed at the stars since the dawn of time, or at least the dawn of humanity. It is such a natural thing to do.

On a clear night, the stars attract our attention. And as we gaze at them – their steadfastness, their stillness, their eloquent silence – as we gaze at them, we find ourself falling into a timelessness. Eternity is here, in the stars and in our seeing of the stars.

We are touching countless generations who have gone before and gazed upwards at the same stars that we are seeing now. Here on earth, much may have changed over the millennia, especially for us human beings with our highly developed societies. But for the stars, nothing has changed. They are as constant today as they have been for millions of years. The constellations we see, have changed very little, if at all, since the first humans turned their eyes skyward to gaze with the same wonder and awe as we do today.

So try this simple thing, which you probably love to do anyway: try looking at the stars, and allowing your mind to become still; allowing that timeless feeling to enter you; allowing yourself to taste eternity.
